Raiders' first-round pick Gareon Conley placed on IR

14 November 2017

This will have to be done with a thinner secondary with rookie cornerback Gareon Conley being placed on season-ending IR on Monday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

ESPN's Field Yates first reported the news.

Conley, the team's first-round pick in the 2017 draft, has battled a shin injury this season. Conley returned for games at home against the Jets and at Washington, however, and the corner had seven combined tackles in those two games.

A projected top-10 pick, he fell to the Raiders at No. 24 overall after a woman said the cornerback raped her April 9 at a hotel in downtown Cleveland.

With Conley sidelined, the Raiders have struggled again in the secondary with starter David Amerson missing time with injuries and Sean Smith having his playing time reduced because of ineffectiveness. We'll see what's happening over the weekend and early (next) week and see what he can do. "But we're going to give him every opportunity to see if he can do it".

Though he was never a burner and would be one of the oldest secondary players in the National Football League if Oakland entertained Cromartie's desire to join the team, he is a big body who at this stage of both players' careers, likely has more speed than the much-maligned Sean Smith - making his interest more than a little interesting for some. They face Tom Brady and the Patriots in Mexico City on Sunday.

It has been a roller coaster type season for the Oakland Raiders with eyes toward making a strong playoff push in the second half of the season.

Latham, a second-year defensive lineman from IN, was suspended four games by the NFL on October 9 for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.
