Harvey Weinstein effigy to be burned at England bonfire

01 November 2017

Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, is an annual event marking the foiling of a plot by Catholic conspirators to blow up Protestant king James I and the Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder on November 5, 1605.

Scotland Yard is investigating 11 sex attack allegations against Weinstein with some dating back to the 1980s.

In 2016, the bonfire committee of Edenbridge selected then U.S presidential candidate Donald Trump for their annual display.

The not-for-profit Edenbridge Bonfire Society has been poking fun at infamous celebrities for over 20 years in its now-traditional event, which attracts more than 10,000 people from across Kent and beyond each year.

"While the burning of the Guys is aimed as a light-hearted way to mark the traditional bonfire celebrations in the United Kingdom, there is of course nothing amusing about the allegations".

"However, Weinstein was the obvious option due to allegations of outrageous and despicable conduct, which we at Edenbridge Bonfire Society obviously found completely abhorrent".

In 2015 a model of scandal-hit former Federation Internationale de Football Association president Sepp Blatter was burned at the event.

Past targets for the society have included Katie Hopkins, Russell Brand, Jonathan Ross, Katie Price, Wayne Rooney, Lance Armstrong, Gordon Brown, John Prescott, Anne Robinson, and Saddam Hussein.

Trump and Prime Minister Theresa May, were also considered this year, but society member Laura Burton-Lawrence said it was made a decision to move away from the political world and look at others.

The effigy of Weinstein will go up in flames at the bonfire celebrations on Saturday 4th November.

Organised by a team of volunteers, the evening begins at 6.30pm with a torch-lit carnival procession through Edenbridge High Street.
