The nation has been buzzing after the Boy Scouts of America recently announced a major change to their program. An official with the Allegheny Highlands Council said the group will adhere to the guidelines. Larger "packs", which are comprised of dens, will decide whether to include dens of each gender or not, the BSA said. We also stand by the value of our program as manifested in years of statistically proven outcomes which demonstrate why a fully immersive single-gender scouting experience offers a powerful and unique choice.
Starting next year, young girls can join Cub Scout units, known as dens, even earn the coveted Eagle Scout honor award.

"No one understands girls better than we do, and despite the recent announcement by Boy Scouts, we don't think that the experience we have or the longevity of that experience is easily gonna be replaced or replicated overnight", says Christi Robinson, Communications Consultant, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. "As gender blurring only increases, it is more important than ever that someone provides a safe environment where boys can be boys, and where their natural talents and tendencies can be affirmed, encouraged and developed by men who can offer a positive role model", said Mark Hancock, the CEO of Trail Life USA.

Although Hulet believes the announcement may cause some contention between the two groups, she said the impact wouldn't be significant because BSA programs have remained heavily focused on outdoor activities while GSUSA programs have not. Girls have different environmental and developmental needs, Wilcox said.
"Eagle Scout gets them somewhere on their resume", she said.
The new challenge from the Boy Scouts is only the latest in a string of difficulties faced by the Girl Scouts over the past 15 years. However, there are many unanswered questions as to the effectiveness the BSA programming will have on girls.
