Mark Zuckerberg has just announced the new lightweight Oculus Go headset, as well as a new VR game from the creators of Call Of Duty. Sure, it's fun to look at 360-degree photos or short video clips on the Gear VR with a Samsung phone, but there isn't a real compelling reason to plop down $400 plus the price of a gaming computer for VR.
At the conference, Facebook announced tons of new hardware and future plans that could change the way VR is being perceived by the consumers. "And $199 is an affordable entry for a lot of people who are just starting out in VR". Unlike most other VR sets, it won't require a smartphone or an expensive PC to use.
Oculus is also included integrated spatial audio with the drivers built directly into the headset, removing the need to use headphones if preferred, although Oculus has also added a 3.5 mm jack for separate headphones to be connected if desired.More news: McDonald's Szechuan sauce promotion event a blunder
The new Oculus Go will be shipping in 2018, and carry a price tag of US$199 (RM840). It will be able to run the same VR as the Samsung Gear, leading Blau to conclude the Go will rely on the same Android operating system as the Gear and likely include similar processors as Samsung phones.
Alphabet Inc offers a rival headset, Google Daydream, that works with yet more smartphones.
Nonetheless, the Pacific virtual reality headset will be up for grabs for only $200.
"The Oculus Go has potential to be a huge driver of growth", if people like the titles and apps on it, Stephanie Llamas, vice president of research at Super Data, said in an email. His visions carry weight, largely because Facebook now has more than 2 billion users and plays an influential role in how people communicate. It will not have positional tracking, which means that high-end VR apps available on the Oculus Rift headset will not work.More news: Singleton truck crash: Driver of alleged stolen semi-trailer refused bail
Former Google executive Hugo Barra now oversees Facebook's VR operations.
Oculus also gave a sneak peak of the next phase of its Santa Cruz motion-tracked controllers that enhance the standalone experience of Oculus Go.
"Rift is here to stay with years of fantastic content on the horizon".
Companies including Qualcomm are developing VR-ready chips, Dubai is planning to utilize virtual reality by creating aquariums to replace traditional security booths, and VR apps are being developed for anything from gaming to healthcare scenarios, where we may one day see our surgeons, doctors, and nurses being trained through VR rather than more traditional methods as they learn about the human body.More news: Fatah, Hamas to discuss security in Gaza under unity deal
