Wilson powers Duke past Baylor

17 September 2017

"They built us up for a lot of things but we've got to back them up".

"We have to go back and correct those two long runs that happened, those were obviously disappointing".

Baylor coach Matt Rhule will try to lead his new team to its first victory Saturday when it takes on Duke.

Baylor update: Sophomore Zach Smith will make the start at quarterback, replacing Arizona graduate transfer Anu Solomon, who has been ineffective and is in concussion protocol.

Wilson finished with 176 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns, scoring on runs of 50 and 65 yards to lead a Duke offense that racked up 439 yards, including 246 rushing yards.

Both Duke BQ Daniel Jones and starting center Austin Davis credited Baylor's defense for executing some things that the team had not seen on tape, particularly when it came to blitzing.

White said he felt the running game is what got the offense started when the Bears took an early lead.

On the next play, Britain Brown broke Hall's tackle and then eluded a diving Williams to complete a 34-yard touchdown that gave Duke a 14-7 lead with 14:21 left in the second quarter.

Shaun Wilson and Brittain Brown combined for 36 carries and 262 yards (7.3 per rush) and while Wilson was the explosive one, scoring multiple touchdowns of 50 or more yards (and setting a new Duke career record for 50-yard-plus rushing touchdowns), Brown was nearly as impressive with his runs where he carried tacklers with him downfield. Smith started the final four games in 2016 as a freshman and won the Cactus Bowl. "At the end of the day, the issue up front is we can't run the football right now", Rhule said, "and when you can't run the football, you can't control the game". Jones had only been sacked once as well.

"Our quarterback has to play better than their quarterback, so we've got to be really disruptive", Nance said. Cornerback Mark Gilbert had two interceptions for a Blue Devils defense that has yielded an average of 174.5 yards through the first two contests - sixth in FBS among teams who have played more than one game.

The Blue Devils had another chance to score when the ball slipped out of Baylor receiver Gavin Holmes' hands after a hard hit.

Baylor: Unlike the losses to Liberty and UTSA, the Bears came out of this one with plenty to feel good about.

Unfortunately for Duke, Rahming's drop was only one of a number of miscues by the Blue Devil pass catchers. But two offensive linemen were whistled for an illegal chop block, setting Duke back 15 yards and wiping six points off the board. On third-and-goal, Black intercepted Jones' pass in the end zone with 21 seconds left in the first half.

Duke's defense opened the third quarter by forcing a turnover on downs, which set up Wilson's second touchdown run of the game. However, the Bears pulled back within a touchdown less than a minute later, when Smith found Chris Platt for 73 yards.

"As I told them, I enjoyed seeing them get significantly better this week than they were last week and the week before - really more so on defense", Rhule said.

Jones completed 29-of-45 passes for 305 yards with two TDs and ran for 108 yards and two more scores in the rout of Northwestern, moving him up to second in the ACC and 12th nationally in ESPN's QBR metric (85.5). Jones was 20 of 35 for 184 yards but was sacked five times and was held without a touchdown for the first time this season.

Once again, Smith went to Platt who caught a short pass and ran across the grain before breaking into the clear for a 79-yard touchdown. The Bears missed the extra point, making the score 24-20 entering the final quarter.
