Too early to tell if Hurricane Jose could hit Florida

Irma weakened early Monday to a tropical storm as it continued on a northward path through Florida.

The monster hurricane that hit the Florida Keys on Sunday as a Category 4 was downgraded to a tropical storm as it finally pushed its way out of the state and into Georgia, where it caused more misery.

There have been isolated reports of downed tree limbs in the early hours of the storm, and Columbus Fire Marshall Ricky Shores said he expects far more downed limbs and power lines later in the day.

The western part of North Carolina is expected to get 3 to 8 inches of rain, with as much as 12 inches possible in some spots, officials said.

"Stay off the roads, stay off the streets, let us complete our assessment, clear the roads of water, power lines, trees and then you can get out there and determine what happened to your individual property or your neighborhood", said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler.

A drone video in Naples, where the storm arrived after making landfall at Marco Island, showed houses that were mostly still standing but that had sustained significant damage and were surrounded by floodwaters.

"It's the worst storm I've ever seen", said South, the NOAA meteorologist.

John Ward, the emergency operations manager of Clay County, said Monday morning that crews had saved 46 people, with an undetermined number still stranded, The Associated Press reported.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Sunday night issued a mandatory evacuation for some barrier islands, CNN reported.

The State Department said Monday that USA embassies and consulates have reopened in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas, Barbados and Curaçao, although services were limited. It was moving toward the northwest at 15 miles per hour, and a turn toward the northwest was expected by Tuesday morning, the Hurricane Center reported. The first category four storm was of course Harvey.
