Petition to replace Portsmouth Confederate monument with Missy Elliott Statue

21 August 2017

An online petition is calling for a USA city to exchange a controversial Confederate monument for one depicting "a true Portsmouth native hero", the rap legend and feminist icon Missy Elliott.

With many right-thinkers of the belief that the statues should be removed, one man reckons he has found the flawless replacement for a Confederate monument in Portsmouth, Virginia. TBH, who doesn't love Missy? "Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it".

As of Friday night, that petition has already gained 105 supporters.

Missy Elliott performs at the FYF Fest on Friday, July 22, 2017, in Los Angeles. "She rose to become a platinum recording artist with over 30-million albums sold", he added. Known for her solo hits "Work It" - which is hilariously referenced in the petition - "Get Ur Freak On" and "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", Elliott has frequently collaborated with Norfolk-born Timbaland (born Timothy Moseley), Virginia Beach's own Pharrell Williams and the late R&B songstress Aaliyah. "Join me in getting City Council to recent this statue in honor of all those in the great City of Portsmouth who work it each and every day". In the meantime, many are protesting the removal of the statues, arguing that they're a part of history or cultural heritage.

Now campaigns and protests for the statues to be removed have spread throughout the country.

Hundreds of protesters from various white nationalist organizations and other right-wing groups convened in Charlottesville last weekend for the "Unite the Right" rally, organized in protest of the city's decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a public park.

"I thought it was kind of a pipe dream", he said to the publication. "You can't wash this one away by shaking my hand and saying, 'I'm sorry.' I'm not forgiving for that". "That should be an everyday thing, that should be a norm".
