First pitch in Washington was delayed three hours Saturday night and there was still a steady drizzle when the game got under way. Harper's left cleat appeared to slip on the wet first base bag as he leaned forward to try to beat Giants first baseman Ryder Jones.

But, if his season just ended with a slick base, that throws a huge dagger into the World Series chances for the Nationals, who have been running away with the NL East for weeks.

The 24-year-old is batting.326 with a.419 on-base percentage and.614 slugging percentage to go with his 29 home runs in 106 games played.

Any significant injury to Harper could be devastating to the Nationals lineup, even with plenty of other talented players on the roster. Adam Lind could be the first replacement option after his strong start to the year, although the entire roster will have to contribute to keep the offense afloat as long as Harper is unavailable. There's been no official word as to whether or not Harper will miss substantial time, but for the time being, Andrew Stevenson is a popular name in D.C.
