Former FSU K Roberto Aguayo Released by Bucs

12 August 2017

The heated battle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placekicking job has officially come to an end after the Bucs made the announcement that the team has parted ways with Roberto Aguayo after his poor performance against the Bengals.

He is one of only four kickers in the last 26 years to be drafted in the top two rounds, joining current Giant Mike Nugent (Jets, 2005, 47th overall), the Raiders' Sebastian Janikowski (2000, 17th overall) and retired Lions mainstay Jason Hanson (1992, 56th overall).

Roberto Aguayo converted 1-of-2 field goals and missed an extra point in the Bucs' preseason opener.

It's a pretty stunning fall from grace for Aguayo, who was arguably the best kicker in college football history.

But as a rookie, he missed a league-leading nine field goals as well as two extra points.

The former Florida State kicker was the Bucs' third pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The unfortunate reality is that the pick is looking increasingly like a massive failure, because Robert Aguayo just doesn't make his kicks. "When I caught it, I knew I pushed it a little bit and I was like, 'hopefully it will stay in, ' but it hit the upright". Unlucky", Aguayo said. "That last one, I was just trying to put a good hit on it.

Bucs Dirk Koetter appeared to have lost all faith in Aguayo after Friday's game. I want to change this. Obviously not up to the standards that I want. I hit it good and it just started to fade. "If you're a kicker, you've got to make your kicks". You just have to keep your head up and move onto the next day. He connected on 23 of 24 field goals during the Seminoles' national title run in 2013 and was a Groza award finalist in 2014 after converting 27 of 30 field goals.

"I keep saying it and I can't say it anymore".
