Bills deal Sammy Watkins, Ronald Darby in separate trades

12 August 2017

The Bills acquired wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round pick in 2018 for Darby.

Matthews, who was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, was dealt to Buffalo, along with a 2018 sixth round pick, for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second round pick. Roseman sent Matthews and the team's third-round pick in 2018 to Buffalo for cornerback Ronald Darby. The Eagles think Sidney Jones, their second-round choice this year, would have been a first-rounder had he not blown out an Achilles' tendon.

Just don't call it a rebuilding plan, Beane said.

For one, Watkins will be a free agent after this season. The reason this is confusing is because Boldin has been a slot wide receiver nearly exclusively over the last two years playing over 70 percent of his snaps there.

In Philadelphia, Matthews was the league's most productive player in terms of slot yards over the last three years according to Pro Football Focus.

Watkins, in three seasons, has caught 153 passes for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Working with rookie quarterback Carson Wentz, Matthews had 73 receptions for 804 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games for the Eagles in 2016, missing two contests because of an ankle injury.

He is playing on the final year of his rookie contract and is due $1.09 million this season. You might say the Bills are looking to trust their own process by stocking up on draft picks over the next few years, and that may not be a bad strategy for the long term. And right now he ranks behind Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, perhaps behind even Nelson Agholor, Thursday's two-point conversion failure notwithstanding, on a receiving corps the Eagles clearly feel they have upgraded substantially.

The key for Philadelphia was adding a starting-caliber cornerback in Darby to a defense that plays in the pass-happy NFC East.

"I don't know. The good thing about that is it's past my pay grade", Shady said of Buffalo's organizational approach.

Darby started 29 games for the Bills the last two years.

The Buffalo Bills are getting one of the most promising young receivers in football, and I'm sure they will quickly discover that if they already haven't.

Whether or not he's worth a gamble in the first round is up to team owners, but the best advice is to take a calculated risk on him if he's still around in the second or third round.
