Can Chelsea boss Antonio Conte become a double Premier League title winner?

11 August 2017

Former England captain Alan Shearer feels Chelsea need to sign at least two or three players in the final few weeks of the transfer window to have any chance of retaining their Premier League title.

"The situation is clear".

There's Chelsea, of course, constant underachievers Arsenal, Manchester United aiming to return to glory, Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool.

Spurs, unlike their other title contenders, have been quiet in this transfer window, so it remains to be seen if a lack of new blood coming in will be to their detriment or not. I think I'm the coach of this team. The other teams will try to give 120 per cent against us.

"[They have improved from last year] in the way they work in the training session". This must be my focus during this period.

Brighton and Huddersfield, both playing in the top-flight for the first time in the post-1992 Premier League era, have been breaking their club transfer records.

Chelsea forward Pedro has been ruled out of the Premier League champions' opener against Burnley on Saturday due to an ankle injury, while new signing Antonio Rudiger could start.

"This has happened before to Arsenal - think of Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas".

One to watch: Ederson - City struggled with goalkeepers last season as Claudio Bravo failed to fill the boots of exiled keeper Joe Hart.

Conte was unable to offer an update on his situation.

A Chelsea spokesman intervened, saying: "Nothing to report on that".

Despite defeat in the Community Shield, and despite our shortfalls in the transfer market, Saturday provides us with an opportunity to lay down a marker - we will fight for this title.

"I'm sure there would have been meetings in preseason between Conte and his players letting them know that".

"Alvaro is working well but he needs time to understand and adapt to our style of football, above all because he's a striker".

And when asked this week whether it would difficult to hold onto their crown without more signings, he said: "Yes very hard".

Spain striker Alvaro Morata has been signed from Real Madrid as a direct replacement for Diego Costa, who is set to depart after falling out with Conte.

The acquisition of Antonio Rudiger has bolstered Chelsea's defensive options.

As for the title defence, Conte declined to predict this season's champions after Leicester's fairytale triumph and his revival of the Blues.

Mourinho has added Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof to his squad this summer as he puts together a group of players capable of challenging in the Premier League and Champions League next season.

All of the top six can lay claim to that crown as each have the pieces to score ad nauseam on any given day, against any given team. "With Leicester and Chelsea, two teams won the league and it was a great surprise".
