Marwan Kenzari in talks to join live-action 'Aladdin' cast

05 August 2017

Mashable has confirmed that Marwan Kenzari is in talks to play Jafar in Disney's live-action Aladdin.

At the same time, former Saturday Night Live comedienne Nasim Pedrad has landed a role created specifically for the new movie.

He joins Naomi Scott, who will play Jasmine, Mena Massoud, who will portray the title character, and Will Smith, who will voice Genie (a role made famous by Robin Williams in the animated classic). Will Smith helps you there, but the really selling point is the property (lots of people have fond memories of Aladdin) and Disney's track record with their live-action adaptations. Beauty and the Beast was a notable recent success at the box office, and last year's Jon Favreau-directed The Jungle Book was an absolute delight (and has a sequel on the way in October 2018).

Kenzari seems like a great choice for the role, so hopefully the deal goes through and we see him trying to take over Agrabah once Aladdin hits theaters.

Among Kenzari's credits is the action thriller What Happened to Monday, in which Noomi Rapace plays seven roles. Of course, while social media is buzzing about this casting decision, they do not think Kenzari being good looking is necessarily a bad thing.

Pedrad, who has also appeared on TV's Scream Queens and New Girl, is repped by CAA. Massoud, who was born in Egypt and raised in Canada, is one of the stars of Amazon's "Jack Ryan".

Aladdin doesn't have a release date just yet.

The original film, based on Arabic folk tale, centred around the key character of Aladdin - a riffraff street rat who is thrown into a world of trouble after he finds a genie trapped in a lamp and pretends to be a prince in order to win the hand of princess Jasmine.
