Texas community colleges allow guns starting Tuesday

01 August 2017

Senate Bill 11 authorizes a license holder to carry a concealed handgun on or about the license holder's person while the license holder is on the campus of an institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education. "It is illegal to display a gun out in the open on campus and you must have licence to carry", the video stated.

Licensed carriers are permitted to openly carry a weapon on campus at any time.

The state's so-called "campus carry" law will be expanded beginning Tuesday to also include community colleges in Texas. The law went into effect for four-year universities in August 2016 but community colleges were given an extra year to comply. To find out the areas where you can and cannot have a concealed handgun, check with your college.

For those interested in learning more about the rules and how they might impact members of the Blinn community, the college's campus carry task force and police department will host several public forums at both the Bryan and Brenham campuses. Other areas, such as single-occupant offices, can be designated as gun-free zones upon successful completion of an appeals process.
