Toy Story 4 unpacks new director, teases plot

15 July 2017

Today was the first day of the D23 Expo 2017 in Anaheim, CA, which means we are going to have nonstop news all weekend from Disney exclusive event.

The film will debut April 12, 2019.

We should hear a bit more about the movie as D23 continues, and more details should help us pin it down before the movie comes out June 15, 2018. Brad Bird is once again writing and directing. Bird talked about how the animation technology has advanced so much since 2004 that they're finally able to get the characters to look like they've always wanted them to. Bird also announced that we would see a lot more of Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) in the center of the action with Bob (Craig T. Nelson) spending a good deal of time on babysitting duty. With his father distracted, the infant engages in battle with a marauding raccoon, deploying an assortment of powers from self-immolation and eye lasers to telekinesis and cloning. Cooley started at the company as an intern working on "Cars".

Given that the fourth Toy Story installment won't premiere until Summer 2019, Pixar had even less footage to show during this presentation. Director Dan Scanlon (Monsters University) is setting the adventure of two teenage "boys" in a "mundane/magical" "suburban fantasy world".

It's interesting that this film won't use the real-world time to explore what's happened with the family since they suited up. Check out the new concept art above.

While Toy Story 4 will be the first feature film that Cooley has ever directed, the filmmaker is a Pixar veteran in his own right, after voicing roles in multiple films and shorts over the years like Up and Toy Story of Terror.
