WWE Releases Austin Aries

10 July 2017

Austin Aries is gone from WWE. "WWE wishes Aries well in all of his future endeavors".

Aries doesn't seem to care too much because he tweeted out that he was happy. But, in the 48 hours since the announcement, several reports have surfaced surrounding the circumstances that led to his release.

No more has been said on the matter as of yet, and Aries is yet to make a public statement about his departure.

We recently learned that 205 Live star Austin Aries was released by WWE, and now, thanks to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, we have more details about the situation. If he asked for his release, and I was told that he did not ask, but he was thrilled that he got it. Aries had signed a three-year deal early last year, so if Aries had quit on his own, WWE could have held him to that and he wouldn't have been able to wrestle until early 2019.

In particular, the 39-year-old was reportedly unhappy that his WrestleMania match with Neville was not featured on the event's DVD, which will see him miss out on any potential royalties from its sales. WWE is not the only professional wrestling company in the world so Aries should easily find work again. The writing staff didn't like him, a lot of people didn't like him.

The terms of his release include the standard 90-day non-compete clause he will be paid his downside guarantee during that period.

The move comes after Aries was replaced in the WWE Cruiserweight Championship match against Neville at tonight's Madison Square Garden house show by Cedric Alexander. He will be eligible to wrestle anywhere else - like NJPW or GFW - in early October.
