Joan Lee, Wife of Comics Legend Stan Lee, Dies at 93

Joan Lee, the wife of Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee - who co-created superheroes from Spider-Man to Thor - died on Thursday in Los Angeles.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, after suffering a stroke and being hospitalized earlier this week, Joan passed "quietly and surrounded by her family".

The statement continued, "The family ask that you please give them time to grieve and respect their privacy during this hard time". They were married in December 1947 and had two children, but one died three days after birth in 1953.

The couple was married for 69 years.

. "And I'm a nut for English accents!" he told the Hollywood Reporter past year. "I think I proposed to (Joan) at lunch".

It was widely understood to be Joan - affectionately known as "Joanie" to Stan - who encouraged the Marvel mastermind to write a new kind of superhero after comics up until then had generally favoured one type of character. But anyway, I took her to lunch.

Joan Lee was a British hat model when she met Stan Lee. "When I was young, there was one girl I drew; one body and face and hair". The couple moved to Nevada so she could quickly divorce her first husband and marry the comic book genius.

The result, with artist Jack Kirby, was Fantastic Four with its more human, sometimes flawed foursome. She also played herself in last year's X-Men: Apocalypse.

She also had a small role in "X-Men: Apocalypse" past year. In addition, she was the author of the 1987 novel The Pleasure Palace.
