Zach Orr's initial decision to walk away from the National Football League because of a congenital spinal condition was probably prudent, but when you are 25 and feel like a million bucks waking up every morning, it's tough to accept that a promising career was taken from you. The Baltimore Ravens starting inside linebacker was facing a congenital neck and spine disorder, something he discovered with an MRI for a herniated disk.
First, Orr will have to pass a physical. Orr originally retired in January due to a congenital spine condition. "But I just kept hearing that from multiple people and some were telling me to just go check out and seek out some more opinions and things like that and come to find out my condition, it is rare -.01 percent of the people have what I have - but there's no actual evidence or facts that I'm at a higher risk than any other player".
Well, fast forward to today and it seems that miracle may have happened.More news: Goodwin Fire Near Mayer Burns More Than 4000 Acres
But per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, a second opinion sparked several rounds of more optimistic advice, and Orr is now considering returning to play.
"I had my mind made up". He'll visit a Lions team that had some of the worst linebacker play in the NFL previous year, when the defense finished dead last in Football Outsiders' defense-adjusted value over average metric and featured zero linebackers with a single sack, forced fumble or interception. "Doctors told me I was done and this is a serious issue".
Somehow I don't think this is going to lead to a bunch of fake retirements so that players can avoid having contract offers matched, but what do I know. I just want to play football. "And it's actually been documented that a college player who had the exact same thing that I have that returned to play with no problems". Doctors told Orr their only concern would be if he played with herniated discs.
If Oakland can land Orr, it could be the final piece to help turn around this porous Raiders' defense and make this team into a feared Super Bowl contender.More news: Trump insists he's engaged with health care bill
Orr is a free agent and can sign with any team since he was an RFA with the Ravena and because of his circumstances was never given a tender.
Undrafted out of North Texas, Orr was signed by the Ravens as a free agent in 2014 and at first was a standout on special teams.
Orr had a breakout season in 2016 after being a backup for the previous two seasons.
The former DeSoto and UNT standout has already garnered interest from other teams as he is expected to visit with the Detroit Lions on Thursday and has seen eight teams reach out to him per ESPN reports.More news: Your smartphone is a 'brain drain' - even when it's off, study says
