Still in Critical Condition After London Fire

20 June 2017

British media have reported that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of exterior paneling on the 24-story tower in a renovation that was completed just previous year.

"I believe there may be people who were in Grenfell Tower that people may not know were missing and may not have realized they were in there on the night", he said. "So that 58 would include that 30", he said.

London's Metropolitan Police confirmed Friday they had launched a criminal investigation into the incident.

In the latest update on Saturday, Commander Stuart Cundy said officers have now established there were 58 people known to have been in the tower at the time of the disaster and who are still missing.

He says tower residents who survived fear a cover-up will keep the truth from coming out.

Anger was directed in part towards May, who failed to meet with survivors when she visited the charred remains of the block of Wednesday, and at the local government for failing to guarantee the safety of the building.

Search and rescue teams from London Fire Brigade reached the second from top floor inside the Tower on Saturday.

Victims, volunteers and community leaders from the Grenfell Tower fire travelled to Downing Street to meet the prime minister Theresa May on Saturday afternoon.

Following the two-and-a-half-hour meeting, a spokesperson confirmed that a series of demands and expectations had been established and said the group would make a full statement on the meeting once it had returned to the community. The British government has announced a 5 million-pound ($6.3 million) emergency fund for the victims.

Following the meeting, May issued in a statement in which she acknowledged that "support on the ground for families that needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough".

The identification of the victims is proving very hard - which experts attribute to the extreme heat of the fire. British health authorities say that 19 patients are still being treated at four London hospitals.

Victims are identified where possible, by at least one of the primary identification methods which are dental comparison, fingerprints and DNA.

The tragedy cast a pall on the Trooping the Color festivities that mark the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. May also said that she has set a deadline of three weeks for all the survivors of the Grenfell fire to be placed in new housing.

The queen said it was "difficult to escape a very somber mood" on what is normally a day of celebration. Hundreds have been left homeless, putting more pressure on officials in a city plagued by a chronic housing shortage.

Later that afternoon, demonstrators stormed the offices of Kensington and Chelsea Council over its handling of the crisis amid concerns that earlier renovation work was linked to the rapid spread of the blaze.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has ordered a judge- led full public inquiry into the incident.

Engineering experts and fire safety specialists believe the building's exterior cladding may have quickly fueled the blaze, overwhelming fire protection devices.
