Human Case Of West Nile Virus Confirmed In Tarrant County

Tarrant County health officials have confirmed the season's fist human case of West Nile virus Monday.

"Unfortunately, West Nile disease is a common occurrence in IN during mosquito season", said State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams, M.D., M.P.H. West Nile virus can cause sickness and in severe cases, an inflammation of the brain.

West Nile virus can cause West Nile fever, a mild form of the illness, which can include fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands or a rash.

"The positive bird means that residents of Chippewa County need to be more vigilant in their personal protective measures to prevent mosquito bites", said Angela Weideman, the county's health officer.

"The Health Department has successfully helped control mosquito-borne diseases for 18 years, when the West Nile virus was first detected", the agency stated.
