Spieth stabilizes in final round at US Open

19 June 2017

Unusually, the finale will not feature any of the world's top three players. I hope when they found the guy who did that.

"It looks as though the weather conditions are going to be a lot more challenging today at Erin Hills", Kite said.

Spieth had a nice day considering how the winds have picked up at Erin Hills. "But I'm looking forward to getting the job done". Most flags were just steps off the green, though a few were in accessible bowls.

"Next time I'll probably stay patient and think I will be better".

Stricker birdied three of four holes going into the par-5 18th. He offered me $50 bucks for it, and I told him the sentimental value of carrying a club you mace is worth diamonds to me. "She's hurting, I don't know if she'll be able to caddie next week, but she did well".

Cameron Champ was the lowest amateur heading into the final round, but he finished with a 4-over 76 to drop back to even par for the tournament. And Si Woo Kim hits a 5-iron 240 yards.a 5-iron!

Winds gusting up to 25mph were making scoring conditions hard and had forced tournament officials to change the pin position on the par-three 13th before play began.

The defining shot of this tournament however put that to shame.

Harman credits the low scoring on the setup of the golf course.

Brian Harman is the leader at Erin Hills. By the end of the day, Oosthuizen was eight shots back of leader Brian Harman. "It's interesting to see where the USGA has gone with the US Open, being a little more friendly than in years past". But Thomas is the only one to do it on a par-72 course.

His first four holes went this way: double bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey.

As you would say, "607 yards?"

QUOTABLE: "I needed something to kind of go in". Still, without Miller on the broadcast, we were deprived of his opinions on Thomas's achievement, and forced to wonder just what line of reasoning he might take in an effort to maintain his personal fiefdom, as Miller was famous for dropping in his accomplishment at any possible moment. That or roll back the specs on the ball. Harman has a one-shot lead over Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood. He tied for 13th in last year's Open at Oakmont. (I walked every hole with Thomas on Saturday, it was fun, more on that here.) Thomas got the headlines and the attention, but it was Harman taking control as the afternoon wore on - posting a more-than-solid 67 of his own to lead by one.

"I feel comfortable. Being in contention in a major is new and I'm excited", said Thomas.

There are three other risky names on the board, though they have a lot of catching up to do and several players to leapfrog.

In addition to being the first to register nine-under score, Thomas also became just the fifth man in the history of the US Open to score 63. Fowler, for example, opened with 65 and followed that with a 73. Two down, 14 to go.

"When you start off like that, you're whole system gets shaken up". He could pass for either a Musketeer or a member of Oasis. "I may not be leading the tournament by the time I tee-off". No son ever had a better father. Let's do this again next year.
