Hunter Greene: Getting to know No. 2 overall baseball draft pick

19 June 2017

Weeks before the draft, a report emerged suggesting the Twins would not take flame-throwing high school pitcher Hunter Greene with the No. 1 overall pick.

"We know he's going to be a leader the second he steps on the field", Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey said.

Twins officials spoke highly about Lewis throughout the draft process. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Lewis was named the 2017 Gatorade Player of the Year in California. "He's got that "it factor" that a No. 1 pick needs".

"This guy gets it", said Mike Radcliff, the Twins" vice president for player personnel.

"Hunter is an extremely athletic and very talented high school prospect who has been on the scene for many years", Buckley said. As a junior, he had a 1.63 ERA and 5-3 record in 55.2 innings. Either way, it gives an idea of just how carefully the Twins guarded the pick.

There is no TV coverage of the draft on Tuesday, but MLB.com will provide online streaming, including analysis and information from draft gurus Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo from MLB's New York Studios.

If the Twins were to pick a college pitcher like McKay or Wright, they might've paid more than the $7.77 million recommended value for the draft slot and had less from their overall pool to sign players in lower rounds.

"I worked really hard a year ago after the season ended and throughout the course of the offseason and season to put myself in the best position possible to begin my professional career", Rooker said.

Stevenson Ranch resident and former Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks pitcher Hunter Greene throws a pitch during a baseball game in April. Greene, featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated this season, also batted.324 with six homers and 28 RBIs.

I'll continue to write-up individual profiles of draftees for at least the first couple draftees today, but for the later picks on whom there's less information at some point it'll be a summary page depending on exactly how things develop.

Falvey said Minnesota's choice came down to the waning minutes, and the decision to pass on Greene was "really tough".

The Reds announced Greene as a pitcher.

At No. 3, San Diego selected North Carolina prep left-hander MacKenzie Gore, marking the first time since 1990 that the top three picks were all high school players.

For the past three seasons Lewis played mostly third base and center field while others handled shortstop.

Atlanta selected Vanderbilt right-hander Kyle Wright with the No. 5 pick, looking to augment a large stable of touted arms already in the Braves' farm system.
