Steve Scalise, the third-ranking House Republican shot Wednesday on a suburban Washington baseball field, remains in critical condition but has a chance for an "excellent recovery", the chief trauma doctor at a Washington hospital said Friday.
Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said Friday that several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized. He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said.
The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more risky than leaving them in place, Sava said.
"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago", Sava said, suggesting that the Louisana Republican had faced an imminent risk of death when he arrived by helicopter at the facility after Wednesday's shooting.
Sava said infection remains a risk.

Legendary former New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre delivered the game ball from an Anheuser-Busch Clydesdale to Special Agent David Bailey, a Capitol police officer injured by shrapnel during the firefight between Capitol police and shooter James T. Hogkinson, who later died in custody. We are especially appreciative of the strong outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, friends, from across Louisiana and across the country, as well as President Trump, Vice President Pence, and all of Steve's colleagues who have reached out during this challenging time.
O'Connor said Bost's office has turned over all of their communications from Hodgkinson to U.S. Capitol Police.
Doctors rushed Mr Scalise to surgery, pumping blood into his body to counteract his multiple haemorrhages.
Scalise, 51, and four others were wounded when an IL man opened fire Wednesday morning on the team practice in Alexandria. The 66-year-old posted several angry messages about President Donald Trump and the Republican party on social media before the incident.
The attacker, who had traveled to Washington several months ago from the Midwestern state of IL, was fatally wounded by members of the Capitol Police who were in a security detail protecting Scalise.

Trump today praised the police officers who fired back at the suspect after the gunfire broke out, saying, "Our police officers were incredible, weren't they?"
"I had no idea this was going to happen, and I don't know what to say about it", she said with difficulty, through tears.
The House Republican baseball team had been practicing for weeks in early mornings at the Alexandria site for Thursday's annual congressional baseball game against Democratic lawmakers' team.
"A single rifle wound, that entered in the area of left hip, it traveled directly across toward the other hip in what we call a trans-pelvic gunshot wound", Sava said.More news: Kohli turns off social media ahead of Pakistan clash
