Congressman in critical condition after being shot during baseball practice

The shooting has raised questions about lawmakers' security, renewed the nation's contentious debate over guns and drawn new attention to the harsh rhetoric that reflects America's political polarisation.

Speaking on the House floor, Representative Glenn Thompson issued a call to "replace the hateful rhetoric and resistance with respect".

Democrats cautioned against falling into partisanship or laying blame.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Scalise had surgery Thursday related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg, "will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".
