Donald Trump has said that congressman Steve Scalise, the third-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives, is "in some trouble" following the surgery he received after being shot during a baseball practice. Scalise was among several people wounded early Wednesday when a rifle-wielding attacker fired on lawmakers on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, outside Washington. The bullet caused massive bleeding, and damaged bones and internal organs.
The president and first lady paid a visit to the Washington, D.C. hospital a short time later, delivering two bouquets of white flowers to Scalise's room and visiting with Scalise's family, The Associated Press reported.
Just before the game Thursday night, members of the Democratic and Republican teams knelt together in prayer near second place, where Scalise would have been playing.
"We can not allow our way of life to be compromised by bad people", Fleischmann said. Multiple US media sources have identified Hodgkinson as the man police believe shot and wounded Congressman Steve Scalise and injured three others.
The officers, along with Alexandria police, returned fire, killing Hodgkinson.
The Republican's team was practicing their batting at the Alexandria baseball field when shots suddenly rang out. Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and former congressional staffer, was also identified as one of those shot.

The president said he had spoken by telephone with Scalise's wife and offered "full and absolute support, anything she needs".
Ryan condemned the shooting and praised the Capitol Police on the House floor later Wednesday.
Trump who initially spoke out against the shooting from the Diplomatic Room in the White House added on Thursday that Scalise "may have brought some unity to our long-divided country".
