16 June 2017

Donald Trump has said that congressman Steve Scalise, the third-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives, is "in some trouble" following the surgery he received after being shot during a baseball practice. Congressman ScaliseHospital officials said Wednesday evening that Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, was still in critical condition after being shot.

Scalise was among several people wounded early Wednesday when a rifle-wielding attacker fired on lawmakers on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, outside Washington. The bullet caused massive bleeding, and damaged bones and internal organs.

The president and first lady paid a visit to the Washington, D.C. hospital a short time later, delivering two bouquets of white flowers to Scalise's room and visiting with Scalise's family, The Associated Press reported.

Just before the game Thursday night, members of the Democratic and Republican teams knelt together in prayer near second place, where Scalise would have been playing.

"We can not allow our way of life to be compromised by bad people", Fleischmann said. But Slater said authorities were still working to determine a motive and had "no indication" Hodgkinson knew about the ball practice ahead of time.
