16 June 2017

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said in a floor speech Wednesday afternoon that he learned that Hodgkinson had volunteered for his progressive campaign for president, which focused on economic equality and almost toppled Hillary Clinton's presidential aspirations and threatened to derail the Democratic Convention last summer. Congressman ScaliseHospital officials said Wednesday evening that Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, was still in critical condition after being shot.

United States media identified Hodgkinson, who died following a shootout with police in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, as a 66-year-old from Belleville Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis.

Members of a YMCA near the shooting site say Hodgkinson spent time there.

Former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, who chatted with Hodgkinson at the gym, said he assumed the man was homeless because he wore pretty much the same outfit every day and carried a bag full of extra clothes.

President Donald Trump said in an address on Wednesday morning that Hodgkinson has died from injuries he sustained as part of the attack. Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, . One said, "Trump is Guilty & Should Go to Prison for Treason". "He was just walking and shooting", she said of the man, whom she described as white and wearing a T-shirt and shorts.

Social media posts also revealed more details about Hodgkinson and his politics.

Here's a list of five victims who were injured in the attack, and what we know about their conditions so far. On Facebook, he posted furious criticism of President Donald Trump and pledged allegiance to Senator Bernie Sanders. He said Hodgkinson was not a staffer and had no formal role in the campaign.

Hodgkinson, 66, was killed in a shootout with police after firing on the practice, authorities said. "He was very nice, said, "Hey I'll take it to a range, somewhere that's safer" and that was the end of it".

He also wrote frequent letters to his hometown newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen letters between 2010 and 2012, many of which included complaints about the same theme: income inequality.

"When tragedy strikes we are family", said Rep. Nanette Barragan of California, who plays on the Democratic baseball team and invited all to attend the charity baseball game Thursday night at Nationals Stadium. Court records show that his legal trouble started in the 1990s with arrests for resisting police and drunken driving.

In more than two dozen letters to the editor of his local paper, Hodgkinson railed against former President George W. Bush and called for "voting all Republicans out of office". The daughter refused and locked herself in a bedroom before Hodgkinson again forced his way in and "became violent", grabbing her by her hair and throwing her on the floor, according to the report. The charges were dismissed, records show. The last time a lawmaker was shot was when Democratic Rep. "I had no idea this was going to happen, and I don't know what to say about it".

As the Federal Bureau of Investigation continues to search Hodgkinson's former home for clues, his former neighbor thinks back to their last encounter wandering if the shooting was just target practice or preparation.
