The nature of the photographs - one of which includes a ruler placed alongside the detonator - allowed no doubt that they were taken as part of the forensic investigation of the scene, and are not snapshots taken by members of the public.

On Wednesday morning, Manchester police arrested three men in the south of the city in connection with the bombing, taking the total number of suspects in custody in the United Kingdom to four.

The father of the bomber who killed 22 concert-goers in an attack in Manchester told Reuters in the Libyan capital on Wednesday that he had last spoken to his son some five days ago, by phone, and "everything was normal". Her French counterpart Gerard Collomb said the man had links with Islamic State and had probably visited Syria as well.

Britain's official terror threat level was raised to "critical", the highest level, late on Tuesday, meaning an attack could be imminent.

Amber Rudd told Sky News that USA officials provided information to the news media that Britain preferred to keep confidential for reasons of operational security.

Another possible link under investigation is whether Abedi had ties to Raphael Hostey, a jihadist recruiter who was killed in Syria, the officials said.

"I would expect this to be temporary but we will keep a close eye to see how long we need them for and when it's appropriate we end Operation Temperer and go back to our different levels", Rudd said. Refunds will be granted, the pop star's managers said in a statement. "This is not us", he said from Tripoli.

British security services are now trying to work out what turned Abedi, the tall, skinny son of a devout Muslim who opposed former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, into a killer.

The suspected bomber grew up in Manchester's southern suburbs and once attended Salford University there. An 8-year-old girl was among the dead. However, the terror outfit did not offer any evidence.

Concertgoer Olivia Campbell, 15, whose mother spoke to CNN during an agonizing wait for news from her daughter, had gone to the concert with her friend Adam to celebrate his birthday. "From the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry", she wrote.

Eight-year-old Saffie Rose Roussos from Leyland was also named as one of the fatalities, Lancashire County Council confirmed.

Suicide bomber Salman Abedi may have carried the powerful explosive used in the terror attack on Manchester Arena in a lightweight metal container concealed within either a black vest or a blue Karrimor backpack, according to reports published by The New York Times. No further details have been released.

Officers entered an address in Manchester city centre on Wednesday afternoon using a controlled explosion, adding to the number of properties that have been searched in connection with the attack.

Jon Rouse of the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership said 64 people were still hospitalized, many with serious wounds that will require "very long term care and support".
