Trump denies collusion with Russian Federation but says he 'speaks for himself'

The New York Times reported Tuesday that, following a meeting with Trump, Comey wrote in a memo that the president asked him to end the FBI's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russian Federation. But he has set a hearing for May 24.

Trump also announced Thursday that he was "very close" to naming Comey's successor as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, with ex-Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman expected to fill the post.

Comey, who was leading the FBI's investigation into Russia's efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, including reported ties to the Trump campaign, was sacked by Trump last week.

The Senate Intelligence Committee, which has its own investigation of alleged Russian election interference, also wants Comey to appear in closed and open session.

"It describes a criminal offense for someone to interfere with an ongoing proceeding with a corrupt objective", said the South Boston Democrat.

The president said he thought the ousting would be greeted with bipartisan support.

Trump is only the fifth US President who failed to win the popular vote. From the time Mr. Trump asked for his loyalty in the FBI's ensuing investigation - and Mr. Comey replied he could only pledge his "honesty" - to Mr. Trump's latest attempt to end the entire FBI probe into what he calls "this Russian Federation thing" that he says is a "made-up story".

The White House is in a "downward spiral" and needs to do something to get "under control", Republican Senator Bob Corker has said.
