The office of the Wayne County Medical Examiner on Thursday determined the cause of his death to be suicide by hanging, noting that a full autopsy has yet to be completed.

Cornell himself tweeted about the show on Wednesday evening, writing: "Finally back to Rock City!" "Somebody can sit at home and say, 'What does this guy have to complain about?' But at the same time it's a comfortable chair to be sitting in and make those judgments", Cornell explained to Rolling Stone in 1994, "When all of a sudden you're successful and sought after overnight, you are instantly opened to a lot of sides of humanity that the average person is never going to see".

Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and last performed Wednesday night in Detroit.

Cornell had performed a concert with Soundgarden in Detroit that night.

Singer Chris Cornell died as a result of hanging himself, USA officials have confirmed.

The music world woke up to sad news today, as Chris Cornell, legendary singer and one of the most iconic figures of the Seattle music scene, died at the age of 52.

Meanwhile, Pointfest, the St. Louis festival the band was scheduled to headline Saturday night, announced that "with deep regret, due to the sudden passing of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden overnight, Pointfest on Saturday is canceled". A hit song from that album, "Black Hole Sun", won the Grammy that year for best hard rock performance and the song "Spoonman" won for best metal performance.

Cornell also had an extensive solo career as a singer, guitarist, composer and lyricist and worked with various other musicians over three decades in the music business.

Soungarden's well-timed third record, Badmotorfinger, arrived in October 1991, just a few weeks after Nirvana's Nevermind, and the band found radio and MTV much more receptive this time around. By 2001, he had helped found the supergroup Audioslave with several members of Rage Against the Machine.

The breakup wasn't anything unusual, Cornell told CNN in 2012. And then part two of that is, like, accept it when it comes and, you know, believe what people tell me.

As a solo artist he's made four albums, including a spot working with R&B producer Timbaland.

His widow Vicky Karayiannis previously assured family and friends Cornell was not suicidal or depressed before his death. "It's what we missed when we weren't a band". "He's one of those guys where whenever I hear him sing it's like, "Oh, what a great, great singer" - just a lovely, powerful, kick you in the f-king face type of a voice, which is very rare because nobody's really sang like him before".
