Walker Lifts LSU To Sweep on Senior Day

14 May 2017

LSU 8, AUBURN 1 LSU eighth inning - Jordan singled. Third baseman Josh Smith went up the ladder and caught the ball for the first out.

"That play I though was going to be one to save (the no-hitter)", Walker said. But, (Gillikin) put a good swing on the home run. Well, there's still some work to be done for you to crown their (redacted), but the LSU team on display this weekend in Alex Box Stadium sure looked to be the one so many expected to see when the year began. "That's just part of baseball". He retired the next 18 hitters he faced with relative ease until Conor Davis worked a walk in the seventh inning. The result was nine hole hitter Sam Gillikin breaking up the no-no with a solo shot to left field. The junior scattered seven hits and yielded only one earned run. Walker relied heavily on the defense behind him, inducing easy pop flies and ground balls. We now start playing for championships.

"A series sweep here was huge", Walker said of his motivations to pitch like he did today. The pitching, I thought, was excellent.

Not to take credit away from Walker and his flirtation with a flawless hitter, but his effort today was just the finale in a trilogy of near dominant pitching performances from Alex Lange, Jared Poche', and Eric Walker.

"This is by far the best conference in the U.S.", Myers said. "I'm not sure Alex Lange has pitched a better game in his career here and he's pitched an terrible lot of great ones". "I still believe that we have earned that, but those decisions are made by powers that are a lot higher than I am". Holland hit a ground ball to third, but a throw in the dirt by third baseman Josh Smith got past first baseman Nick Coomes, allowing Estes to score from first and Holland to reach third. A safety squeeze by Papierski brought in a second run. After centerfielder Zach Watson singled through the left side, there were runners on the corners for Kramer Robertson who sent a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Fighting Tigers the 3-0 edge.

"We have got to be a better offensive team to put some runs on the board because we are getting the pitching", Myers said. "At practice, all of the repetition we get is going to help us". Papierski walked and advanced to third on a single by Watson. Papierski was out on a fielder's choice from Robertson. Jordan then lifted a sac fly to deep left field and Smith came home with his third run of the afternoon.

These two elite teams gave each other expert defensive performances, but a 2 RBI homerun by the Tigers first baseman Kendall Veach in the bottom of the sixth inning sealed the game's fate.

Coach Paul Mainieri's comments: "Eric Walker just pitched a masterful game. This game is a refocusing point where we just need to lock back in at practice".
