Dale Earnhardt Jr. Retiring From NASCAR At Season's End

27 April 2017

NASCAR's chairman and CEO is praising Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s passion for the sport, saying it will "leave an impact on NASCAR that will be felt over its entire history".

Concerning his personal relationship with his father, Earnhardt said, "I never would assume that he was proud of me when he was alive".

When Teresa wouldn't give Earnhardt a piece of team ownership, he left after the 2007 season to drive for Hendrick Motorsports. I feel like that these are the guys that they're the cream of the crop, and maybe I'm the only one that sees it in this room, but I really have a lot of confidence in the personalities that we have. He raced a week after his father died, because that is what everyone thought he should do at the time - or so he thought - because he was a racecar driver and an Earnhardt. Even as a teenager trying to make his way in racing, Earnhardt was his own man, with his own taste in music and bleached streaks in his auburn mop of hair. The Monster Energy Cup Series hardly has the ring of the bygone Winston Cup that the hardiest fans still prefer to call it in casual conversation.

"He believed in me", Earnhardt Jr told a press conference.

"You deserve everything, all the awards and accolades", Hendrick said. "Not of his doing, but in 2001 and 2002 we put the whole sport on his back", Sadler said. "We've been through a handful of races now and didn't have any issues whatsoever".

As team owner Rick Hendrick prepares to fill a hole in his No. 88 Chevrolet, he's not anxious about the options.

"I knew it would be hard to replicate Dad's success", said Earnhardt. When Hendrick formed his organization in 1983, he did so with the help of fabricator Robert Gee, Earnhardt's maternal grandfather.

In reality, it's not a question for today, nor an answer Earnhardt Jr. has to worry about. Earnhardt said he will compete in two Xfinity races in 2018. Earnhardt said telling his boss of almost 10 years was the toughest part of his decision.

Dale Jr. went on to say that many people have told him that his daddy would have been proud of him.

The second concussion came last season, and Earnhardt sat out the final 18 races. "The opportunity to announce my choice rather than some fate that was decided for me". "Of course, in life we're not promised a vote, and that's especially true in racing".

Hendrick Motorsports did not announce a replacement for Earnhardt, whose contract expires at the end of this season.

Earnhardt's retirement could mean good news for Ironwood Ridge High grad Alex Bowmn, who was stout as a substitute last season when Earnhardt was sidelined with a concussion.

What was the coolest text received by the 14-time most popular driver? Speedway Motorsports, which owns Bristol and seven other tracks including Atlanta and Charlotte, has suffered attendance drops every single year since 2008.

"I wasn't even a Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan, I was a Jeff Gordon fan, so he actually turned me into a Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan", driver Justin Crockett said. He carried a torch for his family name, legions of fans and for NASCAR.

Earnhardt has driven for Hendrick Motorsports in Concord for almost a decade.

But in this decision to hang up his helmet in NASCAR's top level at the end of the year is finally Junior showing concern for himself and getting out from under the burden of the lofty expectations inherent in his name since before his dad's death and the grief after.

"To say I'm not going to be here one day is hard".

Earnhardt missed half of last season because of concussion issues, returning at the start of this season only after long and hard rehabilitation.

He activated a Twitter account after winning the 2014 Daytona 500 and instantly had more than 200,000 followers. The sport would never forget Dale Earnhardt, but it evolved to the point where his son was the man. He has lately become a vocal advocate for research into sports-related brain injuries, and the hit he took last June led to months of rehabilitation that gave him a new perspective on his life.
