Speaking at a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, Trump bluntly declared that he saw "no role" for the United States in stabilizing Libya, except in fighting the Islamic State.

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni made the remark in Trudeau's Parliament Hill office today, one day after he was praised by President Donald Trump during a visit to Washington.

Talks with Italian premier Paolo Gentiloni were expected to address US commitments to trade and military partnerships with European allies, as well as security concerns, including the Syrian civil war and Russia's role in the conflict. "We're in a role everywhere, so I do not see that", Trump said when asked if he sees a role for his administration in helping to stabilize Libya and if stabilizing Libya means combating terrorism and ISIS.

Trump, who has repeatedly called on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to boost defence spending, also pointed to some 30,000 USA troops stationed in Italy and called on Italians to "pay their full and fair share for the cost of defence".

Trudeau said the upcoming summit formed a large part of his talks with Gentiloni.

"And it's also, in my opinion - in my very strong opinion, important for the United States".
