Amazon launches Fire TV Stick streaming device in India for ₹3999

20 April 2017

The Fire TV is expected to leverage the recently launched Amazon Prime video service in India and eventually let you stream online content on any TV with HDMI port.

Although, one downside with Chromecast is that it does drain your battery if the device is handling streaming over long periods.

Earlier past year, Amazon had launched its Prime video service in India at a cut-price of Rs.499 for an annual subscription, giving the likes of Netflix a run for their money.

Along with the prime video service from Amazon, users can also access content from rivals including Netflix, Hotstar, Voot, Eros, Airtel Movies and even YouTube.

As a benefit of the partnership, customers buying Amazon Fire TV will get free 100 GB high speed data via Airtel Broadband/Airtel 4G Home Wi-Fi. Amazon Fire TV Stick, however, won't come with Alexa support as it does overseas.

Early adopters will also get Rs. 499 credit on Amazon Pay as part of the offer. Amazon also announced the release of three new titles on Prime Video, exclusively for Prime members and available on Fire TV Stick - Baahubali: The Lost Legends - based on one of 2016's highest grossing movies, Oscar victor Suicide Squad, and a stand-up comedy special by Kenny Sebastian.

This is especially apparent as the Amazon product comes with a remote control that is capable of fully controlling the content on the screen. However, a device playing Amazon Prime Video can still be cast to a device which accepts casting: I've done that with Amazon Prime on a Roku. In terms of specifications, the Fire TV Stick has a quad-core processor, 802.11ac MIMO Wi-Fi, 1080p HD video capability, Dolby Audio.

Amazon's willingness to build so much free NFL marketing into an already pricey contract shows just how much value the sports league's content has for digital streaming platforms looking to make a dent in the traditional TV arena. Beyond that, you've got access to the standard quality controls, check on the apps that are using the most data, and even set monthly quotas in case you're anxious about your Internet connection's FUP. Notably, the fire TV stick also supports Hindi voice search, that could surely boost its adoption. Customers can use the remote to set an access PIN to restrict access to mature content. It also doesn't ship with most smart TVs.
