Dell Match Play 2017: Leaderboard Scores, Prize Money Payouts

27 March 2017

1 was for much of the match in a class of his own before holding off a late round fightback to win 1-up over Spain's gritty Jon Rahm.

Dustin Johnson and 22-year-old Jon Rahm have both impressively marched their way to the finals of the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship.

At the long par-5 12th, Rahm showed off his massive power, uncorking a 426-yard drive that bounced over a cart path and settled into the center of the fairway.

The Match Play is no longer a 64-player single elimination like the NCAA Tournament.

United States 42nd seed Bill Haas held off a late charge by countryman Phil Mickelson to defeat the five-time major victor 2 and 1 and reach a Sunday semi-final against 22-year-old Spaniard Jon Rahm, the 21st seed who routed Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen 7 and 5.

"There's a lot of great players and I'm the first one to do it", Johnson said after completing the WGC Slam.

"I struggled, making the putts that I have been making all week", Mickelson said.

Four birdies in seven holes resulted in the world number 60 moving back to all square after 14 and Johnson might have wondered if it was not his day when he spurned chances to move back in front.

"I struggled, making the putts that I have been making all week", Mickelson said.

With Tanihara in trouble on the 15th, Johnson came up well short of the green with a wedge and missed a 5-foot par putt to win the hole. The 21st-ranked Rahm closed out the match with three birdies in the last four holes they played.

"I'll be sad in a couple of minutes, it's understandable, but after that I'll be really happy".

Extra holes looked on the cards when Tanihara found the heart of the green at the last and Johnson's second spun back off the putting surface, from where he chipped to eight feet.

Brandt Snedeker brought a touch of class to an exasperating at the Dell Technologies Match Play. "I'm proud of the way I played".

Johnson headed to the championship match Sunday afternoon with a chance to become the first player to sweep the four World Golf Championships.

With a share of fourth and sixth in his past two starts at Augusta National, Johnson was confident of adding a Masters green jacket to his 15 career titles.

Rahm made the final with a 3&2 victory over American Bill Haas.

While their length combined with exceptional accuracy was the main reason Johnson and Rahm dominated most of their opponents on their way to the final, it was instructive to see that in their match, the most consequential shots were the short ones.

NOTES: After the tournament's inaugural year, 1999, Geoff Ogilvy is the only player to win the WGC Match Play event in his first appearance, in 2006. He cut the deficit with another birdie at 15, then rolled in his birdie bomb at 16 after recovering from a tee shot into the trees.
