Fore Things: Hadwin overcomes late mistake to win

21 March 2017

The final leaderboard sees him finish in 14th position, joint with two Americans - Nick Watney and JT Poston - and German Alex Cejka.

Seven weeks after he shot a 59, and two weeks before his wedding, Hadwin added another eventful chapter to his unbelievable year. But life hit me in the face pretty quick.

"I'm just hoping I get my deposit back", Hadwin said after the round, drawing laughter.

Birdie putts from 35 feet and 55 feet on the back nine Saturday at the Valspar Championship stretched his lead to four shots.

Patrick Cantlay threatened to claim the most remarkable of victories at the Valspar Championship, but had to settle for second as Adam Hadwin secured his maiden PGA Tour title Sunday. Hadwin's playing partner, Patrick Cantlay, made a short birdie putt moments later that would have cut the lead to one shot. I said yesterday I wanted a chance to win coming up the last.

"I think that'll probably be a nice thing to do", said Hadwin with a laugh when asked if he was going to join Hughes and Weir for a practice round at Augusta.

From the 18th fairway, Cantlay blinked first. Hadwin, in turn, held his own.

The Moose Jaw native lost a two-shot lead with one swing on the 16th hole when his tee shot sailed into the water and led to double bogey.

Hadwin made a one-foot tap-in par for the victory after Cantlay bogeyed the par-four 18th, failing to get up-and-down from a greenside bunker.

He and his caddy went back and forth a little bit, and Hadwin finally said, never letting go of the club he had chosen initially, that he would just "hit the s-- out of it". "It doesn't feel like I've taken as much time off as I have".

Hadwin will have to wait to enjoy all the spoils.

"There's going to be plenty of WGCs to come", he said. Henry were tied for fifth at 7 under.

Hadwin and his red-hot putter held off the hard-charging Cantlay, whose run of five birdies during from holes Nos.

Hadwin took a bogey at the par-4 sixth, missing a five-foot par putt, but bounced back with birdie putts of 11 feet at the par-3 eighth and 15 feet at the par-5 11th followed by a tremendous 53-foot birdie effort at the par-3 13th. I hit two good quality shots on 18 and a great bladed wedge off the fringe there to really put on the pressure.

Hadwin added a six-foot birdie putt at the seventh, then dropped a 33-foot birdie putt at the par-4 12th thanks to some help from being able to read a similar putt from playing partner Herman.

It's happened that way for Hadwin on every other level of golf he's played, so why not on the biggest stage of them all?

Cantlay eventually ran out gas with bogeys on the 15th and 18th holes.

"I kind of looked over and caught my fiancee and gave her a smile".

But Cantlay also showed surprisingly little rust after essentially a three-year layoff from competition.

The once-promising amateur had missed the past two years with a back injury.

Reigning Race to Dubai champion Henrik Stenson left himself well-placed in a pack of three on seven under overall, joining Americans Russell Henley and Dominic Bozzelli. I didn't feel like there was much rust, it's amusing how fast it comes back actually. "My dad was a teaching pro and I credit him with introducing me to the game and being my first real coach".
